Fishing for Trout and Mackinaw in Lake Tahoe is by far one of the best summertime activities. Whether you go out with a charter or just rig it up yourself, catching Macks and Rainbows is always a blast. Going out and fishing takes some time and patience but using the right tackle and hot spots will definitely help. If you’re fishing for mackinaw you will need some downriggers and lures to get to deeper depths. I have had a lot of luck fishing for Macks around 100ft with a black and gold broken back Rapala. Get to the rockier areas where fish like to hangout and let it rip. Another way to catch these fish is to use live minnows. The more realistic it looks the better off you are. Catching Trout is a little different when it comes to depth and tackle. You can usually fish anywhere from 25 to 75 ft in depth and troll with flashers and worms or a generic lure. I tend to like a smaller Rapala or flat lure because the fight is better when you hook into one. You can troll along the rocky shores and hope for a big one. On the east shore around Cave Rock or around dollar point on the North Shore are always a few good options. I prefer to troll for Mackinaw just because you might have a better chance of catching more fish. With so many regulations on the streams and rivers into the Lake, fishing has become more difficult. Less food is in the water making the fish adapt to not eating as much. Keep in mind there is a reason why they call it fishing and not catching. You have to get out there and try, otherwise you will never know what you might catch.
